Turbo is a 4 year old black Labrador retriever.  His full name as registered with the A.K.C. is “Cougar Mountain Judgment Day III”, but he likes Turbo for short.    He was purchased through Puget Sound Security Detection Dogs in Marysville, Washington, where Turbo was trained to identify the odors associated with Marijuana, Methamphetamine, Heroin and Cocaine.  After Turbo learned to identify these odors, Officer Wayne Chastain went to Marysville, Washington for two weeks and trained with Turbo.

After this training Turbo and Officer Chastain received their

certification as a team through the Pacific Northwest Detection Dog Association.

Upon returning to Oregon Turbo and Officer Chastain went to another week of training in Portland, Oregon through the Portland Police Bureau.  After this training Turbo and Officer Chastain were certified through the Oregon Police Canine Association.

In order to keep these certifications they attend annual conferences, and continually train with other handlers and trainers on a monthly basis.  Training for Turbo is a continual process and the goal is 1 hour of training each work day.

In October, 2009 Officer Harris became Turbo’s handler.  Officer Harris and Turbo went to a two week training in Medford, Oregon where they learned to work together as a team.

Turbo went to work for the Baker City Police Department in October, 2007.  Since going to work, Turbo has assisted in the seizure of 11 grams of methamphetamine, 2.6 pounds of marijuana, 200 oxycontin pills, 662 ecstasy pills, 1 gram of cocaine, $12,500, two handguns and one vehicle.  28 people have been arrested or cited.

A huge intangible benefit to Turbo is he allows searches to be done faster and more efficiently than officers could.  This saves money because officers are not spending the time searching.

Turbo is an “aggressive” alert dog, which means he scratches and bites at the source of the drug odor.  Searching for drugs is a game for Turbo and his reward when he finds drugs is a rolled up cloth towel which Officer Harris uses to play with Turbo.

Turbo lives with Officer Harris and his family.  Officer Harris is the only officer authorized to deploy Turbo to search for drugs.

Turbo has given demonstrations to service groups, youth groups and schools.  He has been used by the Baker County Sheriff’s Office and the Baker City Police Department on school searches. Baker County Parole & Probation has used Turbo for home searches.  The Oregon State Police, Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Baker City Police Department and the La Grande Police Department have used Turbo on drug interdiction stops.
